Meet Katie
I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) based in North Carolina, offering telehealth therapy services across the state. I identify as a Black, biracial, cisgender, lesbian woman with Jamaican and Italian heritage. My lived experience as a queer person of color informs my clinical work, and, I don’t assume I know your story since every person has a different relationship to culture, identity, and belonging.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent six years working across higher education, corporate HR, and career development. That background shapes how I approach career and professional concerns specifically - I’ve sat at the table in hiring conversations, coached people through career transitions, and understand the complexities of being LGBTQ+/BIPOC in the workplace.
Outside of sessions, I’m often trying different New York Times Cooking recipes, watching the WNBA, getting cozy with a cup of tea and a book, learning how to knit, listening to reggae/dancehall, and practicing yoga. I also love baking and a lil sweet treat!
My Approach
Therapy with me is a mixture of warmth and support, along with direction and practical tools for change. I draw from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectial behavior therapy (DBT), person-centered therapy, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS-informed).
These are different tools for different needs, focused on the same idea: you don’t need to eliminate the different parts of yourself. You need them to work together.
I take a trauma-informed approach to therapy. We might explore patterns in your thinking, behaviors, and feelings that could be learned responses that developed to keep you safe in the past - and might not be helpful anymore in your present. I honor your autonomy. You decide what you want to discuss. Trauma-informed means I do not force or expect you to discuss details from events you don’t feel ready to process. I follow your pace.
Social justice and liberation are key to my approach. We’ll consider the impact of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, colonialism, and other systems of oppression on your mental health and well-being. I view you holistically.
In our work together, you can expect:
A warm, non-judgmental space where you don’t have to over-explain or justify your identity.
Real skills for changing your relationship with anxiety and unpleasant emotions. (Spoiler alert: this reduces the power they have over you!)
Support with getting clear on your own values, separate from others’ expectations.
A collaborative relationship – we build goals together. I’ll check in with you along the way to see how you’re feeling about therapy and work together to meet your needs.
